Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR): The Mercator Research Centre Ruhr (MERCUR), founded in March 2010 by the Stiftung Mercator and the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR), supports the strategic development plans of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the universities of Dortmund and Duisburg Essen and thus the goals of UAMR. The scientists of the UAMR universities can apply through their respective rectorates for financing in four different funding lines: project support, structural support, personal support and strategic-explorative support.

Global Young Faculty:The Global Young Faculty is an initiative of Stiftung Mercator, coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, Essen. It is a contribution of these two institutions, the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr and the extra-university research institutes to the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010. The Global Young Faculty is additionally supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Historisches Doktorandenkolleg Ruhr (HDKR): The HDKR offers a common forum for discussion for doctoral candidates of the University Duisburg-Essen and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Up to twice a year current dissertation projects in modern history will be presented and intensively discussed with other doctoral candidates and professors. The aim of the HDKR is the creation of a network of young academics in the field of history, where both interuniversitary exchange and communication on organizational and conceptual aspects of dissertation projects will be promoted.

ScienceCareerNet Ruhr: ScienceCareerNet Ruhr (SCN Ruhr) wants to support high potential young academics in the Ruhr area in order to contribute to the existing profile of professional excellence and offers individual support for the best high potential. The program consists of four modules: CoachingPLUS, Herbstakademie, mentoring³ and career forum.

Project ‚UN simulation DuEMUN IV-Ruhr Model United Nations and diplomacy’: Since 2005, international conferences with about 200 participating students from the UAMR and European and Asian partner universities as well as reporting diplomats and policy-makers have been realised each year. The project conveys qualificatory key competences to talented students that are to take on executive functions with regard to International Relations in private or state institutions.

RGS Econ (Ruhr Graduate School in Economics): The Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) is a center for research and higher education in Economics. It has been initiated and founded by three universities of the Ruhr Area (Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen), and by RWI, one of Germany‘s leading economic research institutes. Over a period of three years, graduate students receive guidance leading to a Ph.D. in economics complying with highest international standards.

ef.Ruhr Forschungs-GmbH: The ef.Ruhr bundles the expertise of over 40 Professors from the field of Energy Research of the three Metropole Ruhr Universities. Apart from the processing of individual research projects, the ef.Ruhr also secures appropriation for Research Projects, places the applications for support and sees the ambitious projects through from the onset to the end.

High-Performance-Computing: For the cutting-edge research, carried out at the four sites of the UAMR, scientific computing and the usage of HPC resources is of central importance. To reflect the relevance of this topic the working group "scientific computing in the UAMR" decided to present information regarding scientific computing and the usage of HCP resource in a uniform way and to improve the UAMR wide collaboration of scientists.

Cooperation of the UAMR IT providers:The central IT providers of the three partner universities joined forces to provide the UAMR with all relevant IT services. Individual core competencies have been identified for shared and improved services between the partners.

  • the RuhrCampusOnline - a joint platform for blended learning,
  • further international offices,
  • a concept for a Professional School to improve training of students aiming at the Master of Education,
  • concepts for a harmonized system of compatible study courses to broaden options for students,
  • the accessibility of all services for all alliance students,
  • an International Postgraduate Program based on the Ruhr-University Research School experience,
  • infrastructure sharing and improvement, e.g. in the area of information technologies,
  • common quality benchmarks for all areas
