Stiftung Mercator

The Stiftung Mercator is one of the largest German foundations. It initiates and supports projects for improving education in schools and higher education. In Gerhard Mercator’s name, the Stiftung aims at developing an international and tolerant consciousness by supporting intercultural exchange of knowledge and traditions.

The Stiftung works towards developing new pathways for people – irrespective of birth and heritage – to unfold their personalities, become socially engaged, and to make the most of personal opportunities. The Stiftung is characterized by an entrepreneurial and international spirit and professionalism. As the home of the Mercator Family, the Stiftung has a special affinity to the Ruhr region.

The Stiftung Mercator considers the Ruhr University Alliance as an enormous chance for establishing the region as a centre of scientific excellence. This potential is a point of attraction for academics and students. The Foundation gives its full support to the Alliance and has decided to support the growth of the Ruhr as a Science Area by initiating and financing scientific projects.
